All the stone pottery from Manipur are Gas and Microwave friendly.
Stone Pottery is traditionally called ‘LOREE HAMLEI. The characteristic gray-black pottery with a lacing of fine cane is fashioned by the Tangkhul Naga tribe of a village Longpi, in Manipur. The pottery takes its name from the village of origin. The weather rock and the serpentinite are crushed to powder and is mixed with the ratio 5:3 with water for clay formation. With very little water the dull brown mixture is kneaded and flattened on a wooden board for the intial slab work. Unlike most pottery, Longpi does not resort to the potter’s wheel. All shaping is done with the hand and with the help of moulds. Once it is dried and hard enough then it is taken to camp fire for heating for 5 to 7 hours to reach 900degree centigrade. Thereafter, the pottery is taken out while it is still hot and it is is rubbed with a local leaf known as “machee” leaf (Pasania Pachiphylla). The pottery is meant for direct cooking over Gas or firewood.
